Welcome to the eighth episode of The Social 7 (wow, has it been 8 already?!)  With a busy (social) week behind us, we have lots of things on the agenda for today’s episode, so let’s get right into it.

7. Mystery Murder: Last week as his trial came to an end, a man was found guilty for killing his estranged wife last year after she changed her Facebook marital status from married to single.

6. Vatican on YouTube: Just when you thought just about everyone was on YouTube these days…  Last week, Pope Benedict XVI launched an official YouTube channel for the Vatican.

5. Get Married on MySpace: Last week, MySpace announced that it plans to create a 13-episode reality series called “Get Married on MySpace,” which will debut on MySpace TV this spring.  What’s next?  Virtual Weddings?

4. The White House is a Bloggin’: As Barack Obama was sworn into Presidency this past Tuesday, the technology seemed to follow.  In the tech. mix, the White House launched its first official blog Tuesday.

3. Internet Is One Billion Strong: In this day and age, who could really live without it?  Last week, ComScore issued a report stating that the Internet officially surpassed one billion global users in December.

2. Ustream Launches an iPhone App: Just in time for the Inauguration, Ustream.tv launched an official application into the iTunes app store and in just a few days became the most popular free entertainment application.

1. The ‘Social Media’ Inauguration: Though his Presidential campaigning has long since come to a halt, President Barack Obama’s use of social media continued to prevail.  In the most social Inauguration ever, people everywhere engaged in conversation about the monumental event in more ways than one.

Tweet of the Week:

According to the Twitter blog, the company saw about 5 times as many tweets per second as normal on Inauguration day.  Thought many thought Twitter wouldn’t be able to handle the excess traffic, it performed surprisingly well.  Jeffjarvis: “If people would stop writing tweets predicting that Twitter will fail, maybe that will lighten the load enough so it doesn’t fail.”

Viral Video of the Week:

Pope Benedict calls the Internet a “New Way to Speak to God” during a video posted on the Vatican’s new YouTube channel.
