Top Stories:

7. Crunchies Winners: The second annual Crunchies were held on Friday night and Facebook won Best Overall for the second time.  There were 349,137 votes casted in various categories such as “Most Likely to Make the World a Better Place (GoodGuide), Best Mobile App (imeem mobile) and Best Start-up Founder (Twitter).

6. MySpace Widget: Social networking on a third screen (after PC and mobile) is closer to reality after several announcements at CES around Internet-connected TVs and content partners such as MySpace.  Through a partnership with Toshiba, Yahoo and Intel, the “MySpace Widget for TV” will be available later this year.

5. Yahoo ConnectedTV: One of the biggest announcements at CES focused on the marriage of Internet and TV came from Yahoo with its Yahoo ConnectedTV initiative.  eBay, Flickr, Hulu, Twitter, YouTube and more will be available as widgets through Yahoo.

4.Facebook Hits 150MM Active Users & CNN Partnership: Facebook’s influence and adoption continues on its upward path with a significant milestone (surpassing 150 million monthly active users globally) and a partnership with a mainstream news media outlet (CNN.com partners with Facebook for Inauguration Day).

3.Twitter Gets Hacked: Twitter, one of the fastest growing social networks today, was hacked and the list of celebrities and high-profile people targeted raises concern for the security of this valued communication tool.

2. Models Take on Google and Facebook: Model behavior on social media is attracting heavy attention as a result of comments on Google (Blogger) and the removal of a group on Facebook.  What rights to free speech do bloggers have and how does Facebook decide if a group violates its terms of service?

Social Media in Gaza/Israel Conflict:  The daily discussion of unrest and rockets in Gaza has demonstrated the power of social media in exchanging ideas and promoting unheard voices and viewpoints. Search #gaza on Twitter for the latest comments or consider following these profiles: IsraelConsulate and AJGaza

Tweet of the Week:

As noted in our number three story, several notable celebs were hacked.  Although a very serious matter, we still found humor in the false tweets.  The Britney Spears tweet gave us a 4-feet wide giggle.

Viral Video of the Week:

We’ve seen recorded violence on video erupt into riots before and the shooting (still under investigation) in Oakland generated a similar response in the community - WARNING: This video may be disturbing for some.

Social Shutterbug of the Week:

5! No we’re not talking about Subway’s deal for footlongs - we’re fascinated with the enormity of having 5 U.S. Presidents in the same room. Smile, you have the free world on your shoulders!
